The Spring “taken off” - La Primavera decollata

At the four corners of the passage of Ponte Santa Trìnita (Holy Trinity Bridge), are located four statues that represent the four seasons, made by Giovanni Caccini, Pietro Francavilla and Taddeo Landini. The statues were fished up in the river Arno during the years of reconstruction of the bridge destroyed by German bombings of Second World War. It so happened that the Spring's head was not found, and the statues were put back on the bridge, missing off the head of one of them.

A Florentine antiquarian, Bellini, even offered a reward of 5000 dollars to those who had found the missing head. In 1961, after a long research it was found by the “renaioli” (“sand diggers”), local workers extracting sand from the river Arno, and subsequently it was put back on the statue. When you pass by there, look carefully at its neck. It has a very big “scar”!

Ai quattro angoli del passaggio del Ponte Santa Trìnita, vi sono poste quattro statue che rappresentano le quattro stagioni, opera di Giovanni Caccini, Pietro Francavilla e Taddeo Landini. Le statue vennero ripescate nel fiume Arno durante gli anni della ricostruzione del ponte distrutto dai bombardamenti tedeschi della seconda guerra mondiale. Il caso volle che la testa della Primavera non fu ritrovata e le statue vennero riposizionate, mancanti della testa di una di loro.
Un antiquario fiorentino, Bellini, offrì addirittura una ricompensa di 5000 dollari per chi avesse ritrovato la testa mancante. Dopo lunghe ricerche fu ritrovata dai "renaioli", lavoranti del luogo estrattori della rena dall'Arno, nel 1961 e successivamente riposizionata. Guardate bene quando passate da quelle parti, ha il collo con una grossissima "cicatrice"!
