"Il Maio"

Il Primo di Maggio del secolo intorno al 1200, in città si formavano varie comitive di giovani che cantavano il "Calendimaggio" e seguivano un capofila che aveva in braccio "Il Maio", che era un ramo d'albero fiorito a cui erano attaccati ciondoli e nasti di stoffa colorati o anche ciambelle, melaranci e altre cose galanti. Il Maio veniva attaccato alla porta della fanciulla di cui si era innamorato ed essa si affacciava alla finestra timida e ascoltando la gioia e l'amore del giovanotto dimostrando gesta di gradimento.

Le fanciulle di questo tempo si vestivan di rosso e erano inghirlandate di fiori di ogni albero e con il suono di pifferi e chiarine ballavano "il rigoletto" in mezzo al popolo gioioso e felice.

The May Day of the century about the year 1200, in the city varied groups of youngs were formed.They sang the “Calendimaggio” and followed the leader that had in his arms "Il Maio", that was a branch of a flowering tree to which trinkets and coloured ribbons of cloth or even rings, oranges and other gallant things were attached . “Il Maio” was attached to the door of the young girl whose he had fell in love and she appeared shy at the window listening the joy and the love of the young man showing liking exploits. The young girls of that time dressed of red and were wreathed of flowers of every tree and with the sound of pipes and clarions they danced "il rigoletto" among the joyful and glad people.
